Designation: UCT Professor Emeritus & Immediate Past Head of UCT Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, Cape Town, South Africa (2012-2024). Previously Consultant Anaesthetist at Glenfield Hospital, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, United Kingdom (1996-2012). 

Name of immediate previous institution: University of Cape Town (UCT), Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Presently from 2025 back in University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust working as Consultant Anaesthetist (adult and congenital cardiothoracic anaesthesia) in East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre, Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield Hospitals.  

Areas of interest:

  • Adult and Paediatric Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care, and influence of Echocardiography and medical ultrasound on perioperative patient outcome.
  • Valvular heart disease, especially Rheumatic Heart Disease, and the failing ventricle post-cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Congenital heart disease and influence of perioperative echocardiography on patient outcome.
  • Value and safety of Point of Care Medical Ultrasound in Critically Ill Patients in the Developing World 
    Finding health solutions and introducing a fair, inclusive Perioperative Medicine Programme to South Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Peer-reviewed publications and international lectures.
  • Enthusiast in the field of Transoesophageal (TOE) and Transthoracic (TTE) Echocardiography. Member of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia (EACTAIC) community. Honorary Transesophageal Echocardiography Fellowship and life-long member recognition from IACTACON (India) – 2010, 2016.
  • Regular Glenfield Hospital Hands-on TOE Course since 1999, one of the leading/only hands-on courses in UK. Ongoing till today.
  • Important collaborations between UCT and international anaesthesia communities established during his tenure as Chair from 2012-2024, with research initiatives involving teaching and research in adult and paediatric cardiovascular and thoracic anaesthesia, and TTE and TOE, between Department and international experts have given rise to strong publication activities in these fields.
  • Co-organised and hosted several ACTA, ACTA Echo and EACTA ECHO Congresses and Symposia in Leicester between 2000 and 2012, South African national Perioperative Cardiovascular and Thoracic Congresses, November 2015 and 2018 in Cape Town, Focused Perioperative Echocardiography courses, TOE courses, etc. Co-organised and hosted International Congress of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anaesthesia (ICCVA 2023) in Cape Town.
