Southampton is a vibrant maritime city on the stunning south coast of the UK, close to the New Forest and the stunning Jurassic Coast world heritage site. University Hospital Southampton (UHS) is home to the Wessex Cardiothoracic Unit, which admits about 1200 cases every year. This handles a diverse range of cases, including adult acquired and congenital cardiac procedures.
The unit has an established programme of subspecialist procedures including MTEER edge-to-edge mitral valve repairs and thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair. Consultants provide anaesthesia for adult and paediatric cardiac procedures in theatre and catheter laboratories.
The UHS CICU was recently awarded Centre of Excellence status by the Cardiac Advanced Life Support group, highlighting the unit’s high-quality training and dedication to patient safety, quality of care and outcomes for patients following major heart surgery. It is one of only a small number of dedicated cardiac intensive care units in the UK and is consistently ranked among the country’s leading centres for intensive care services.
