Theme: Mechanical Circulatory Support
Freeman Hospital recently celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the first heart transplant in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The first successful and longest surviving baby transplant in Europe was in 1987 at Freeman Hospital. The Hospital is also home to the National Institute of Transplantation as it provides both adult/paediatric thoracic organ transplantation as well as liver/kidney tranplants under one roof. It is the only transplant
centre in the UK to offer heart transplants for adults with complex congenital heart disease.
Inextricably linked to the Transplant programme is the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) programme which was started in 2003. Freeman Hospital is an Advanced Heart Failure Centre and has utilised various MCS devices, including LVAD, BIVAD, Total Artificial Heart as well as temporary MCS devices such as ECMO and Impella.
